Keyword density is the percentage of times a target keyword appears in a piece of content compared to the total word count. If you have a 1000-word article and your keyword appears 10 times, your keyword density is 1%. It was once thought to be a major ranking factor, but that thinking has evolved.
Is Keyword Density Still Important?
Not in the old sense. Google’s algorithms have become much smarter. They understand synonyms, context, and topic relevance without needing to see a keyword repeated at a fixed percentage. Stuffing keywords to hit a specific density actually hurts your rankings now.
What to Do Instead
- Use your main keyword naturally in the title, first paragraph, and a few headings
- Include related terms and synonyms throughout the article
- Write for your reader first, not for a keyword count
- Focus on covering the topic thoroughly rather than repeating specific phrases
SEO Plugin Guidance
Tools like Yoast SEO still show keyword density as a metric and suggest a range around 0.5%-2.5%. Use it as a rough guide, not a strict target. If your writing sounds natural and covers the topic well, you’re on the right track.
