UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a URL to track where your traffic comes from in Google Analytics. They let you see exactly which campaign, channel, or piece of content drove a specific visit to your website. Without them, traffic from social media or email shows up as “direct” and you lose visibility into what’s actually working.
The Five UTM Parameters
- utm_source: Where the traffic comes from (e.g., google, facebook, newsletter)
- utm_medium: The marketing medium (e.g., cpc, email, social)
- utm_campaign: The name of your campaign (e.g., spring_sale, product_launch)
- utm_content: Differentiates between links in the same campaign
- utm_term: Used for paid search to identify which keyword triggered the ad
How to Create UTM Links
Use Google’s free Campaign URL Builder tool or tools like Bitly to generate and manage UTM links without building them by hand.
Viewing UTM Data
In Google Analytics, go to Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition (GA4) to see your UTM data broken down by source, medium, and campaign. This tells you precisely which marketing efforts are driving traffic and conversions.
