XML Sitemap

An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the important pages on your website in a format search engines can easily read. It acts like a roadmap, helping Google and other search engines discover and crawl your content more efficiently, especially for large sites or pages without many internal links pointing to them.

What an XML Sitemap Contains

  • The URL of each page
  • When it was last updated
  • How often it’s likely to change
  • Its relative priority compared to other pages

Why Sitemaps Matter

Search engines find pages by following links. If some of your pages are hard to reach (buried deep in the site structure, or newly published), a sitemap ensures Google finds them faster. It’s especially valuable for new sites with few backlinks and large sites with hundreds of pages.

Creating a Sitemap in WordPress

Yoast SEO and Rank Math both automatically generate XML sitemaps for your WordPress site. Once installed, your sitemap is typically at yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml or yoursite.com/sitemap.xml.

Submitting Your Sitemap

Log into Google Search Console, go to Sitemaps in the left menu, and paste your sitemap URL. Google will revisit the sitemap automatically to check for updates as you publish new content.
