Keyword stuffing is the outdated practice of overloading a webpage with keywords in an unnatural way to try to manipulate search engine rankings. It used to work back in the early days of SEO. Today it’s a violation of Google’s guidelines and will hurt your rankings rather than help them.
What Keyword Stuffing Looks Like
- Repeating the same keyword phrase every few sentences awkwardly
- Hiding keywords in white text on a white background
- Packing the meta description or title tag full of repetitive keywords
- Lists of keywords at the bottom of a page that don’t read naturally
Why It Doesn’t Work Anymore
Google’s algorithms, especially updates like Panda and the introduction of BERT, are designed to detect and penalize keyword stuffing. Google now evaluates content quality, depth, and user satisfaction. Stuffed pages get demoted or removed from the index entirely.
What to Do Instead
- Use your main keyword in the title, first paragraph, and naturally throughout
- Write for humans first, and let keywords fit in naturally
- Use synonyms and related terms instead of repeating the exact phrase
- Focus on answering the reader’s question comprehensively
